After extensive research, Nathan realized that there are 4 main problems with standard-issue windlass applied tourniquets. 

  1. Tourniquets take too long to apply.

  2. Tourniquets mostly require 2-handed application.

  3. Tourniquets require a significant investment of time and money for training.

  4. Tourniquets inflict serious pain even when used correctly, often leading the user to leave too much slack for the tourniquet to be effective. 

The SLAP-ON Tourniquet sets out to try and solve these problems.

  1. The SLAP-ON Tourniquet can be applied in under 10 seconds.

  2. The SLAP-ON Tourniquet can be applied with 1 hand (because of the loop created by the slap band).

  3. The SLAP-ON Tourniquet is intuitive with culturally universal context clues, which requires little to no training.

  4. The SLAP-ON Tourniquet has a pre-set valve which eliminates the guesswork involved with how much pressure is needed to effectively stop the bleeding.

The Medium of Application

  • This creates the “loop” which significant cuts time in applying the tourniquet.

  • It grasps your skin/clothing which mitigates slip.

  • The design of the SLAP-ON application method comes from a toy familiar with Americans of all ages.

The Bladder

  • Designed to be durable.

  • Enclosed on both sides by neoprene fabric, increasing the durability and functionality.

  • The nylon webbing and latch are suitable for application on both arms and legs.

The Pull to Inflate

  • This is the CO2 combustion chamber. 

  • Inside, there is a fail-safe puncturing pin.

  • Outside, there is a regulator valve that can be attached to a pneumatic machine in a hospital.

  • The 12g cannister has a pre-set pressure.

  • Pressure can be increased or decreased to accommodate continued care, necessary adjustment, and maintance.
